Italian Restaurant Gramercy: Dinner Before a Show

Pick an Italian restaurant Gramercy keeps close to the venue and book the first seating. Gramercy Theatre is at 127 East 23rd Street; Irving Plaza is at 17 Irving Place. Neither is more than a few blocks from a good kitchen, so the constraint is the length of the meal, not the walk.

How I selected these

Proximity first, measured in blocks rather than minutes, because walking times depend on who you are walking with. Everything here is within a short walk of one of the two venues, and I have given the street address so you can judge the distance yourself.

After that, format. A restaurant that can put two courses in front of you inside an hour is more useful before a show than a better restaurant that cannot. That means published opening times matter, tasting menus count against a room rather than for it, and a fixed-price menu with a set number of courses is an advantage.

I did not include bars, and I did not include rooms outside the Gramercy and Flatiron blocks even where the food is better. Hours, prices and addresses below were read off each restaurant’s own site and verified August 2026.

The two venues, and what they do to your timing

Gramercy Theatre sits on East 23rd Street between Park Avenue South and Lexington. The 6 train stops at 23rd Street and Park Avenue South, roughly a block west of the door, and the N, R and W stop at 23rd and Broadway a few blocks further west.

Irving Plaza is further south, at 17 Irving Place, below Gramercy Park and within easy reach of the Union Square station, where the 4, 5, 6, N, Q, R, W and L all converge. That matters more than it sounds: if you are eating near 22nd Street and the show is at Irving Plaza, you are walking six or seven blocks south, which is fine, but you should count it.

The practical consequence is that the same restaurant is a different proposition depending on which venue you are heading to. Novità is a one-block stroll to Gramercy Theatre and a genuine walk to Irving Plaza. Anything on Park Avenue South splits the difference.

Italian restaurant options in Gramercy, north to south

Novità, 102 East 22nd Street. The nearest thing to Gramercy Theatre on this list, one block south of the venue. The pasta section is where it earns the spot: tonnarelli freschi al cacio e pepe at $27, gramigna alla carbonara at $29, strozzapreti al pesto at $29, orecchiette with spicy sausage and broccoli rabe at $29.50. Penne al pomodoro e mozzarella is the cheapest thing on the list at $26.50 and the fastest to the table. Reservations run through OpenTable.

If your show is at Gramercy Theatre and you are running late, this is the only address on the page that lets you leave the restaurant and be at the door in under a block.

Isabelle’s Osteria, Park Avenue South. Sits between the two venues, which makes it the flexible option. Two things recommend it for a show night specifically. The first is Aperitivo Hour, Monday to Friday from 2 to 6pm at the bar, where small bites, spritzes, selected cocktails, wine and beer are $5 — useful when the group is arriving from four different offices. The second is a fixed-length menu, covered below.

À la carte, bucatini cacio e pepe is $26, tagliatelle Bolognese $30, rigatoni alla vodka $31. Reservations open thirty days ahead for parties up to ten, on OpenTable and Resy, and walk-ins are taken first come, first served.

Rezdôra, 27 East 20th Street. Three blocks south of Gramercy Theatre and the best cooking in this radius. Dinner starts at 5pm every night and runs to 10:30pm. Anolini di Parma is $26, tagliolini al ragù from Modena is $28. It belongs on the list and, on a show night, it comes with a warning.

Why the Rezdôra tasting is the wrong booking tonight

Rezdôra’s regional pasta tasting is $110 per person with an optional $90 wine pairing, and the menu prints three conditions: a vegetarian version exists, the full table must participate, and you should allow two hours.

Two hours is the number that matters. Book a 6pm tasting and you are standing up at 8pm, which is not a pre-show dinner, it is the evening. Book a 5pm tasting and you are eating a two-hour progression of stuffed pasta at a pace set by the kitchen rather than by your calendar.

The tasting is the reason to go to Rezdôra. It is also the reason not to go before a show. Order à la carte instead of the tasting and you have a fast, excellent two courses three blocks from the venue.

This is the sort of thing that only shows up when you read the fine print on a menu rather than the reviews, and it is a good argument for checking the restaurant’s own site rather than a listing. Our block-by-block dinner guide has the full Gramercy set laid out geographically.

The Gramercy Italian restaurant clock

Work backwards from the door time, not forwards from when you get hungry.

Two courses with a drink is comfortably an hour if you order promptly. Three courses is ninety minutes and you will be watching the clock through dessert. A tasting menu is not a pre-show meal at any hour.

So: a 7pm door means a 5:30pm or 6pm table. A 6:30pm door means eating at 5pm, which most of these kitchens can do — Rezdôra opens for dinner at 5, and Isabelle’s runs its Restaurant Week dinner from 5pm on weekdays. If the show is late and doors are at 8pm, you have room for three courses, and that is the night to book something ambitious.

The other half of the calculation is the bar. Arriving at 5pm for a $5 aperitivo and moving to a table at 5:45 gets you a relaxed hour and a half without holding a table you are not using. Restaurant Week ends August 16

NYC Restaurant Week Summer 2026 runs through August 16, with $30, $45 and $60 prix-fixe menus, Monday to Friday, Saturdays excluded and Sundays optional. Prices cover food only; tax, drinks and gratuity are extra.

For a show night, a prix fixe is worth more than the discount, because it is a fixed number of courses arriving in a known order. Isabelle’s is running a three-course Restaurant Week dinner at $60, served Monday to Friday from 5pm, with a fluke crudo, chilled corn soup or tomato and watermelon salad to start, then mafaldine with pesto, roasted hake or a Berkshire pork porterhouse, then tiramisu or panna cotta. The two-course lunch is $30 and runs 11:30am to 4pm.
