Is Gramercy Park Open to the Public? Where to Eat Nearby
No. Gramercy Park is private property, and the Gramercy Park Block Association says so on its park page: “The Park is not open to the public.” Only key holders, whose access is tied to the surrounding lot-owner properties, can go in, and each may bring up to six guests at a time. Everyone else can walk the public sidewalks around the fence and eat at one of six restaurants on East 18th to East 22nd Streets, listed below.
The access rules come from the Block Association’s park page and the restaurant details from each restaurant’s own website, all checked in October 2026.
Who can go in Gramercy Park?
Access is tied to the buildings around the park. Eligible residents, occupants, members and congregants use it through the key arrangements of their building or institution, and “Living nearby, by itself, does not confer access.” The Trustees of Gramercy Park, elected by the surrounding lot owners, administer the park; the Block Association is a separate neighborhood organization.
The rules close the usual loopholes:
- A key holder may invite up to six guests at one time, but cannot combine invitations into a larger group, lend the key or admit passersby, and guest privileges do not permit parties, ceremonies or other private events.
- There is no public application, admission ticket or independent membership, and a donation to the Block Association does not provide access or a key.
- A special occasion creates no exception. The Block Association says it regularly receives requests to enter for marriage proposals and photographs, and cannot arrange access for them.
How do you get a key to Gramercy Park?
Through a building or an institution, not an application. The instructions begin with “Start with your building management”: residents of eligible lot-owner buildings contact their managing agent, board or building office, and eligible members or congregants ask their institution. Forms and distribution vary by building, and keys may not be borrowed, loaned, transferred or copied. For anyone outside those buildings and institutions, the page describes no route to a key.
Is Gramercy Park open to the public on Christmas Eve?
No public Christmas Eve opening is published. The Block Association’s park page mentions no Christmas Eve and no holiday opening. The closest language is one line in the park rules: “Limited Trustee-organized observances have their own arrangements for eligible key holders and guests.” That points to arrangements for key holders and their guests, not to an hour open to everyone.
As of October 22, 2026, the Block Association’s News & Letters archive lists 49 entries for 2026, the newest dated October 20, and none of the titles announces a holiday opening. Any older report of a public Christmas Eve hour is not a current notice, so the safe plan is to treat the park as closed to anyone without a key unless the Trustees or the Block Association post otherwise. The Block Association’s contact page says it “cannot arrange public access, including for proposals or other special occasions.”
What can you do around Gramercy Park without a key?
Walk the perimeter. The Block Association says the surrounding public streets and sidewalks “offer everyone a way to enjoy the Park’s setting and the architecture around it,” and that it cares for the 41 street trees outside the fence. Its Buildings & Monuments page profiles buildings around the park, among them 36 Gramercy Park East and 60 Gramercy Park North.
Where can you eat near Gramercy Park?
Six restaurants publish a street address and weekly hours on their own sites, and all sit on East 18th to East 22nd Streets. Two, marked in the table, do not describe themselves as Italian restaurants.

Best suited to a bar seat with no booking
Gramercy Tavern’s Tavern room is the walk-in option. Its reservations page says “The bar is available for walk-ins at all times,” and the room is open every day from 11:30am to 11pm with an à la carte menu of “soulful fare from the open, wood-burning grill.” The separate Dining Room lists 5pm to 9:30pm Sunday to Thursday and 5pm to 10pm Friday and Saturday, and its page mentions a lunch menu, so confirm lunch service with the restaurant.
Best suited to the latest hours
Pete’s Tavern is open seven days a week from noon to 2am, the only one of the six open past 11pm. Its kitchen closes at midnight on Friday and Saturday and at 11pm the rest of the week. The rest of its street is covered in Irving Place restaurants below Gramercy Park. For Italian late in the evening, Rezdôra is open until 11pm every night, and Giorgio’s of Gramercy until 11pm Thursday to Saturday.
Best suited to pasta at lunch
Rezdôra serves lunch Tuesday to Friday from 12pm to 2:30pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 11:30am to 2:30pm; Monday is dinner only. Its site says the menu “celebrates the cuisine of Emilia Romagna and is centered around house-made pasta.” Novità, which calls itself a neighborhood trattoria serving regional Italian dishes, is open Monday to Friday from 12pm to 3:30pm and again from 5pm. Giorgio’s of Gramercy is open from noon Monday to Friday and from 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.
By these hours, five of the six rooms are open by noon Tuesday to Friday (all but Carlotto), four on Monday (Rezdôra and Carlotto start at 5pm) and three on Saturday and Sunday (Gramercy Tavern’s Tavern room, Rezdôra and Pete’s Tavern).
Best suited to an early-evening start
Carlotto opens at 5pm every day and closes at 9pm on Sunday and Monday and at 10pm Tuesday to Saturday. Its happy hour runs 5pm to 6pm Sunday to Friday and not on Saturdays, and its three-course prix fixe dinner is $65 per person daily as of October 2026, with supplements on selected dishes.

What are the ZIP codes for Gramercy Park?
The six restaurants’ published addresses use two ZIP codes, 10003 and 10010. The 10003 code appears on East 18th to East 20th Streets (Pete’s Tavern, Carlotto, Gramercy Tavern and Rezdôra) and 10010 on East 21st and 22nd (Giorgio’s of Gramercy and Novità). The Block Association’s own address, 34 Gramercy Park East, uses 10003. This compares printed addresses and is not a Postal Service lookup.
How were these restaurants chosen?
Each of the six publishes a street address and weekly hours on its own website. They are listed, not ranked, and nothing here rates food or service. None of the pages cited lists a Christmas Eve schedule, so confirm hours with the restaurant before planning around December 24.
