Happy hour in Gramercy and the blocks just past it

East 18th Street

Tarallucci e Vino at 15 East 18th Street runs happy hour from 3pm to 6pm, and its site is specific that the menu applies in the bar and the outdoor area only. That distinction matters here more than at most places, because the outdoor seating half a block from Union Square is the reason to come. The room opens at 8am on weekdays, so it is also the answer if your afternoon started as a late lunch.

Pete’s Tavern at 129 East 18th Street, on the corner of Irving Place, runs 4pm to 6pm Monday through Friday. The bar itself is open from noon to 2am seven days a week, which makes this the fallback when a window elsewhere has closed. The building has been trading since 1864 and the room looks it, which is either the appeal or the objection depending on your afternoon.

East 19th Street

ABC Cocina at 38 East 19th Street runs the tightest window on this list, 4pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday and Sunday. One hour is not much margin, so this is a plan rather than a drift. The bar itself runs 4pm to 10pm daily. Note that its sister restaurant abcV shares the address and does not publish a happy hour of its own.

Park Avenue South at 20th Street

Two options face each other on the same stretch of Park Avenue South, and they open two hours apart.

Barbounia at 250 Park Avenue South, on the corner of 20th, runs 3pm to 7pm Monday through Friday at the bar only. Four hours is the widest window in this guide and 7pm is the latest close, which makes it the practical choice when people are arriving from work at staggered times. The kitchen is Mediterranean rather than Italian, and the restaurant describes its own location as the heart of Gramercy.

Isabelle’s Osteria at 245 Park Avenue South, between 19th and 20th, opens its Aperitivo Hour at 2pm weekdays and runs to 6pm, at The Bar rather than in the dining room. The 2pm start is the earliest in the neighbourhood by an hour, which is the specific reason to know about it: it covers the stretch of the afternoon when nothing else in Gramercy is serving a drinks menu, and it is a workable landing spot if you are between a lunch that ended early and a dinner that starts late.

What is actually on it is a short list rather than a token gesture. The small bites section runs to saffron arancini, marinated olives, a house cured guanciale toast, ricotta toast, watermelon and feta, marinated beets, cheese focaccia and a poached shrimp gazpacho. There are two spritzes, passion fruit and strawberry, alongside four cocktails including a Fumo Negroni and one called Park Avenue Passion. The menu groups small bites, spritzes, cocktails, wine and beer each under a single flat price point rather than pricing item by item. The printed menu shows that figure without a currency symbol, so confirm the amount when you order rather than assuming it.

Best suited to: an early arrival, a solo hour at a bar with something to eat, or a group assembling before a 7pm table elsewhere. Walk-ins take the bar on a first-come basis, so there is nothing to book.

Just past the neighbourhood line

Eataly at 200 Fifth Avenue runs a happy hour on its AMALFI rooftop from 3pm to 6pm, Monday through Friday. It is a twelve minute walk from Gramercy Park and the only rooftop option within reach, which in August is not a small consideration.

Il Fiorista at 17 West 26th Street, in NoMad, runs an Aperitivo Hour every day from 4pm to 6pm, with the bar open from 4pm until late and a further late-night window. Seven days is unusual on this list, where almost everything else is weekdays only. This is the Sunday answer.

The pattern worth noticing

Six of the seven windows here apply at the bar, the counter or the outdoor tables, not at a dining table. If you sit down at a proper table and order from the regular menu, you are paying regular prices, and no one will stop you or correct you. Ask for the afternoon menu by name when you arrive, and sit where it applies.

The other pattern is the gap. Between 6pm and 7pm, Barbounia is the only window on this list still open. If your group is assembling after 6, plan around that rather than hoping.

Can I get the happy hour menu if I sit at a table instead of the bar?

Usually not, and the restaurant is not being difficult about it. Bar-only pricing exists because the bar turns faster and needs less service, and most of the menus in this guide say so explicitly on the restaurant’s own site. Tarallucci e Vino specifies its bar and outdoor area. Barbounia and Isabelle’s both specify the bar. The workaround is simply to ask when you walk in rather than after you have been seated, since a host can put you at the bar or a high top before the fact and cannot easily move you afterwards. If your group is too large for the bar, assume you are paying regular prices and pick the room for the room.
